Man dies while being arrested in South Australian town

A 44-year-old man has died following a police arrest in a South Australian town after an incident involving a weapon.

Police say officers were called to a street in Clare, in the Clare Valley about 130 km north of Adelaide, at around 12:30pm after reports of a man damaging property while armed with a metal pole.

Authorities allege the man threatened police when they arrived, prompting officers to deploy a Taser. However, the Taser was reportedly ineffective.

Assistant Commissioner David O’Donovan said officers then physically restrained the man during the arrest, at which point he became unresponsive.

Police provided first aid at the scene, but the man could not be revived and was declared dead.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is now underway.
