Australian data giant AirTrunk commits $30 billion to India’s AI and cloud future

Australian data centre company AirTrunk has announced plans to invest more than $30 billion in India by 2030, in what could become one of the largest foreign investments in the country’s digital infrastructure sector.

The Sydney-based firm said the expansion plan followed a meeting between its founder and CEO Robin Khuda and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed India’s growing demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Backed by Blackstone and CPP Investments, AirTrunk said the proposed funding would be used to build around 5 gigawatts of new data centre capacity across several Indian states and union territories.

The company said this expansion would support India’s push to become a global hub for AI and cloud services, while also boosting jobs, local supply chains, and broader technology sector growth.

AirTrunk described digital infrastructure as being as important today as traditional infrastructure like roads, ports, and power networks, highlighting its role in modern economic development.

The company expects the project to create tens of thousands of jobs in construction, development, and long-term operations, alongside faster growth in India’s AI and cloud industries.

CEO Robin Khuda said India has become one of the company’s key long-term investment markets, pointing to the government’s focus on digital growth as a major attraction.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the announcement, saying the planned ₹3 lakh crore investment reflects India’s rising importance in global digital infrastructure.

AirTrunk first entered the Indian market in April after acquiring Lumina CloudInfra, and currently has around 600 megawatts of projects underway in cities including Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad. The new plan would significantly expand its presence in the country.

The announcement comes as India continues to attract large-scale investments in AI and cloud infrastructure, with major domestic players also increasing spending in the sector.
