Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa delivered a historic performance at Norway Chess 2026, winning the tournament and becoming the first Indian to secure the title. His campaign was defined by two classical wins over World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, achieved on Carlsen’s home turf in Norway.
Praggnanandhaa also registered key victories against top players including reigning World Champion D Gukesh, along with strong performances throughout the event. He finished the tournament at the top of the standings, ahead of Wesley So and Alireza Firouzja, who placed second and third respectively, while sealing the title with a final-round win over Germany’s Vincent Keymer.
Carlsen entered the tournament as one of the favourites, given his status as World No. 1 and multiple-time winner of Norway Chess. However, Praggnanandhaa’s consistent and precise play proved decisive in one of the strongest fields in world chess.
The victory marks another milestone in Praggnanandhaa’s rapid rise since becoming one of the youngest grandmasters in history at just 12 years old. Born in Chennai in 2005, he first gained global attention after defeating Carlsen in an online rapid game in 2022, and has since become a regular contender in elite international tournaments.
His success is part of a broader surge in Indian chess, alongside players such as Arjun Erigaisi and World Champion D Gukesh. India’s growing strength is also reflected in women’s chess, with leading players like Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, and Divya Deshmukh achieving success on the global stage.
