Norway crown princess’s son jailed for four years after rape conviction

The stepson of Norway’s future king has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of rape and other offences following a seven-week criminal trial that has cast a shadow over one of Europe’s oldest monarchies.

Marius Borg Høiby, 29, is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and became part of Norway’s royal family when she married Crown Prince Haakon in 2001.

An Oslo court on Monday convicted Høiby on two counts of rape, as well as domestic violence and several other offences. He was sentenced to four years in prison but was acquitted on two additional rape charges.

Prosecutors had sought a prison term of seven years and seven months.

Høiby admitted to some of the lesser offences but denied the rape allegations and the most serious charges. He retains the right to appeal the verdict and sentence.
