Gold Coast-based plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr Dilipkumar Gahankari has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List, recognising his service to the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The honours list announced as part of Australia’s annual King’s Birthday awards, recognised 948 Australians across the Order of Australia (General and Military Divisions), as well as meritorious and conspicuous service categories. Governor-General Sam Mostyn congratulated all recipients, describing them as “remarkable Australians” being honoured for their contributions.

Dr Gahankari, originally from Maharashtra, India, has been recognised for his extensive career in plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery in Australia, as well as his contributions to clinical practice, medical education and healthcare advisory work.

He has served in both public and private health systems across Queensland and New South Wales, including roles at major hospitals such as Gold Coast University Hospital and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

His expertise spans reconstructive and burn surgery, hand surgery, and cosmetic procedures, with a strong focus on patient safety, surgical standards and improved clinical outcomes.

In addition to his clinical work Dr Gahankari has contributed to academic teaching and research through various Australian and international university appointments.

He has also been involved in advisory roles with government and regulatory bodies, including work related to medical device safety and healthcare tribunals in Queensland.

His broader humanitarian efforts include participation in surgical outreach programs and disaster response missions across the Asia-Pacific region, including East Timor, along with healthcare service in rural and community settings in both India and Australia.

This year’s King’s Birthday honours list includes hundreds of recipients across multiple categories, with investiture ceremonies to be held at Government House in the coming months.
