Sydney community groups explore ‘Modi Express Flight’ for Melbourne Meets Modi event
Community organisers have launched an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a proposed group flight from Sydney to Melbourne for attendees planning to participate in the highly anticipated Melbourne Meets Modi community reception in July.
The initiative, branded as the “Modi Express Flight,” aims to help Sydney-based members of the Indian Australian community travel together to Melbourne for the expected visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Interested participants have been asked to submit details including their full name, email address, phone number, organisation through which they registered for the event, number of travellers, and the age of each traveller.
Organisers have clarified that the form is strictly an Expression of Interest and does not guarantee a flight booking or seat allocation.
“This form is for Expression of Interest only and does not constitute a flight booking or confirmation,” the organisers stated.
The proposal reflects growing excitement surrounding Melbourne Meets Modi, which is expected to attract Indian Australians from across the country.
According to the official event website, general registrations remain open for individuals not registering through an organisation, with registrations closing at 11:59 pm on 15 June 2026.
Earlier reports indicated that Marvel Stadium has emerged as the preferred venue for the reception, which is expected to take place on the evening of 9 July. Nearly 31,000 people have reportedly registered their interest in attending the event.
The proposed group travel arrangement is designed to simplify travel planning for community members, particularly those attending as part of organisations or larger groups.
While no airline, ticket pricing, or final flight schedule has been announced, the “Modi Express Flight” concept has already generated significant interest on social media. Promotional material features aviation-themed imagery alongside Australia-India branding and details about the registration process.
Community-organised travel for Modi-related events has precedent in Australia. During Prime Minister Modi’s 2023 visit to Sydney, diaspora organisations coordinated travel from Melbourne to Sydney for the “Australia Welcomes Modi” event at Qudos Bank Arena, which attracted thousands of attendees.
The upcoming Melbourne reception is expected to hold similar significance, particularly in Victoria, home to one of Australia’s largest Indian-origin communities.
International community receptions for Modi have traditionally evolved into major cultural and diplomatic gatherings, bringing together professionals, students, business leaders, religious organisations, cultural associations, and community groups of Indian origin.
As preparations continue, organisers are working through key logistical considerations, including registrations, venue arrangements, ticketing, security requirements, and travel coordination.
The Sydney group flight proposal is part of broader efforts to improve accessibility for attendees travelling from outside Victoria. However, organisers will need to address factors such as demand, aircraft availability, pricing, passenger verification, security protocols, and event coordination before any flight is confirmed.
Those interested in the proposed Sydney-to-Melbourne flight are encouraged to submit their Expression of Interest through the organisers’ Google Form. Organisers have reiterated that submitting the form does not guarantee a seat and that any travel arrangements will depend on demand and operational feasibility.
With registrations continuing and travel planning underway, the expected visit is shaping up to be a major event for the Indian Australian community.
If confirmed, the Melbourne reception could become one of the largest Indian community gatherings in Australia since Modi’s landmark Sydney appearance in 2023.
