US spearfisherman dies in drowning tragedy at Manly beach

US spearfisher dies after being rescued from waters off Sydney beach

A US national has died after being pulled from the water at Sydney’s popular Shelly Beach in Manly.

Emergency services were called to the beach after reports that two swimmers had been caught in the water, with one man found unconscious.

Paramedics performed CPR on the man, believed to be in his 40s, before transporting him to hospital in a critical condition. He later died in hospital.

The second swimmer, a man in his 20s, was not injured.

Police said the two men, who knew each other, had been spearfishing when they were reportedly caught in a rip current.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the deceased man has not yet been formally identified.
