Trump praises Modi as a tough negotiator, says US would stand with India if attacked

Modi and Trump hold bilateral talks at G7 Summit, discuss trade, security and maritime issues

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, focusing on trade, regional security, maritime safety, and strengthening strategic cooperation between India and the United States. The meeting marked their first face-to-face bilateral engagement since Modi’s visit to Washington in February 2025.

A key focus of the discussions was the proposed India-U.S. trade agreement. Following the meeting, Trump said the two countries were “very close” to finalising a deal, signalling significant progress in negotiations aimed at expanding economic ties and boosting bilateral trade. Both leaders agreed to continue efforts towards a balanced and mutually beneficial trade partnership.

Regional security and maritime concerns also featured prominently in the talks. Prime Minister Modi raised issues relating to the safety of international shipping routes and Indian seafarers operating in the Gulf region. The matter has gained urgency following the deaths of three Indian sailors in a recent incident involving a tanker near the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking after the meeting, Trump praised Modi’s leadership and negotiating abilities, describing him as a “tough negotiator.” He also referred to the Indian Prime Minister as “calm, cool and a total killer” in reference to his negotiating skills, while making several complimentary remarks about Modi during their interaction.

Highlighting the strength of India-U.S. relations, Trump said Washington would stand by India in times of need, underscoring the close partnership between the two nations. The comments reflected the growing strategic cooperation between New Delhi and Washington, despite the absence of a formal mutual defence treaty.

The leaders also reviewed developments in regional affairs, defence cooperation, energy security and broader geopolitical challenges.

Their meeting took place alongside wider G7 discussions focused on global economic stability, ongoing conflicts, energy security and the resilience of international supply chains.
