Man dies days after alleged assault near Melbourne primary school
A 63-year-old man has died six days after he was allegedly assaulted by two men in a park near a primary school in Melbourne’s south-east.
Police allege that a 21-year-old man with no fixed address and a 22-year-old man from Narre Warren South attacked the victim at Strathaird Reserve at about 3:15pm on June 12.
The incident occurred as students from a nearby primary school were leaving for the day, with several children and families reportedly witnessing the disturbing scene.
A spokesperson for the Department of Education said the school’s priority was supporting students and staff affected by the incident.
“We are aware of a distressing incident that occurred in Strathaird Reserve near Strathaird Primary School on June 12. The safety and wellbeing of students and staff remains our highest priority,” the spokesperson said.
Students and staff who witnessed the incident have been offered wellbeing support, and the school is continuing to work closely with families.
The victim, a Clyde North resident, was taken to hospital with critical injuries following the alleged assault. He died on Wednesday.
Police believe the men involved were known to each other.
The two accused men have been charged with recklessly causing serious injury and remain in custody.
Victoria Police said the Homicide Squad will now lead the investigation and will consider additional charges once the results of a post-mortem examination are available.
