Hurricanes end 10-year drought with stunning 55-point demolition

The Hurricanes delivered a dominant performance to defeat the Chiefs 60-5 in the Super Rugby final, securing their first championship in 10 years.

Wingers Ruben Love and Josh Moorby scored two tries each as the Hurricanes overwhelmed the Chiefs from the outset in Wellington.

First-half tries from Moorby, Love, Fehi Fineanganofo and Callum Harkin helped the hosts build a commanding 29-0 halftime lead.

The Hurricanes maintained their intensity after the break, piling on more points to complete a one-sided victory and end a decade-long wait for Super Rugby glory.

For the Chiefs, the defeat marked a fourth consecutive loss in a Super Rugby final, following championship defeats in 2023 and 2025 against the Crusaders and in 2024 against the Blues.

The Chiefs avoided a shutout when Naitoa Ah Kuoi crossed for their only try in the 75th minute.

After the match, Moorby praised the Hurricanes’ strong team culture and said the victory was especially meaningful as several players prepare to leave the club at the end of the season.

Chiefs centre Quinn Tupaea, recently named Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year, admitted his side struggled from the opening stages and were unable to recover after the Hurricanes’ fast start.

He acknowledged the Hurricanes’ quality and said the Chiefs never managed to play their usual game despite fighting until the final whistle.
