Sydney Shark Alert: Weather conditions draw bull sharks and great whites closer to shore

Recent weather conditions are creating ideal conditions for two shark species — bull sharks and great white sharks — near Sydney’s beaches.

Shark expert Dr. Chris Pepin-Neff said that a combination of recent rainfall and changing sea temperatures is drawing both species closer to the shoreline. According to him, bull sharks prefer water temperatures above 20°C, while great white sharks are more active in temperatures below 20°C. Current conditions sit between those ranges, making the environment suitable for both species.

Recent heavy rain has also created brackish water near the coast, which provides favorable hunting conditions for bull sharks. At the same time, cooling ocean temperatures are attracting great white sharks closer to shore.

Dr. Pepin-Neff warned surfers, especially around Sydney’s Northern Beaches, to remain cautious and surf in groups for safety. He also advised swimmers to avoid brackish water and stay between the flags at patrolled beaches.

He explained that noise and movement from groups of people in the water may help discourage sharks from coming closer.

The warning follows several suspected bull shark attacks in Sydney earlier this year, including a fatal incident involving 12-year-old Nico Antic, who died after being seriously injured.
