Albanese and Luxon to outline the next phase of Australia–New Zealand relations

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will welcome New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Noosa, Queensland, on Saturday for the annual Australia–New Zealand Leaders’ Meeting, where both sides are expected to focus on economic resilience, energy security, and regional stability.

The talks come at a time when both countries are dealing with global economic uncertainty, alongside ongoing pressures on fuel supplies and international supply chains.

Key discussions will include ways to strengthen economic growth, deepen the Australia–New Zealand Single Economic Market, and expand cooperation in defence, security, and Pacific regional affairs. Both leaders are also expected to explore opportunities for closer trade and investment ties.

Albanese emphasised the strength of the bilateral relationship, calling New Zealand Australia’s closest ally and highlighting the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

Christopher Luxon also underlined the importance of maintaining strong cooperation, describing Australia as New Zealand’s most important partner in trade, security, and travel links, especially in a changing global environment.

Alongside the summit, Luxon is expected to meet Queensland officials, including representatives involved with the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to discuss potential opportunities for New Zealand businesses connected to the preparations for the event.

This year’s meeting follows the 2025 leaders’ summit in Queenstown and continues efforts to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people ties between the two close neighbours in the Indo-Pacific region.
