Donald Trump was seen appearing drowsy during a recent Oval office event where a major funding package for the coal industry was announced.
At several moments, his eyes appeared closed or half-closed while officials around him continued speaking.
During the event, Energy Secretary Chris Wright spoke near the president as Trump sat at his desk, occasionally turning away and showing signs of fatigue.
The incident comes shortly after a separate House hearing, where Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he had never seen Trump fall asleep in public.
However, lawmakers later played footage suggesting otherwise, sparking political debate over the president’s alertness during official duties.
A similar episode was reported last month at another White House event focused on maternal health and fertility, where Trump also appeared to briefly close his eyes.
The latest announcement included around $980 million in grants aimed at supporting the coal industry, with funding intended to keep several coal plants operational and develop new capacity.
Trump praised coal as a vital energy source, saying it remains a key part of U.S. power generation.
The policy has drawn criticism from environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, which opposed continued investment in coal amid a shift toward renewable energy and natural gas.
U.S. coal production has declined significantly since 2008, as cleaner and cheaper energy sources have become more widely adopted.
