Truck triggers sprinkler system in Sydney Airport M5 Tunnel

Drivers travelling through Sydney’s busy Airport M5 tunnel witnessed an unusual scene this morning after a truck struck overhead sprinkler equipment, causing water to pour onto the roadway beneath the airport.

Video footage captured the moment the tunnel’s sprinkler system activated after being hit by the vehicle, sending a large spray of water across the road.

According to Transport for NSW, the incident occurred at around 5:15 a.m. when a truck travelling in lane one collided with several overhead sprinkler heads. The impact triggered the system and led to the temporary closure of one southbound lane.

Emergency services and Transport for NSW maintenance teams quickly responded to the scene to assess the damage and manage traffic.

Authorities confirmed that all southbound lanes have since reopened and traffic conditions have returned to normal, with no delays currently reported. The driver involved is cooperating with authorities.

As a safety measure, the tunnel’s southbound sprinkler system has been isolated while repairs are carried out. Fire and Rescue NSW has also been informed and necessary safety procedures have been put in place.

Repair work on the damaged sprinkler heads is expected to take place outside peak traffic hours, with maintenance scheduled for tonight following further assessments.
