Aboriginal voices to help shape northern territory domestic and family violence policies

Expressions of Interest have opened for Aboriginal Territorians to join a newly established advisory group aimed at strengthening efforts to prevent and respond to domestic, family and sexual violence across the Northern Territory.

The new Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Aboriginal Advisory Group (AAG) will provide advice to the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence on policies, programs and initiatives designed to improve safety and support for Aboriginal individuals, families and communities.

Minister Robyn Cahill said the group would ensure that Aboriginal voices, cultural knowledge and lived experiences play a central role in shaping government responses to family violence.

“The Aboriginal Advisory Group will help guide how we prevent and respond to domestic, family and sexual violence in the Territory by ensuring Aboriginal perspectives are reflected in decision-making,” Cahill said.

The AAG will replace the previous Aboriginal Advisory Board and will place a stronger emphasis on community engagement, two-way information sharing and incorporating the experiences of those directly affected by violence.

The group will consist of 11 members, including an independent chairperson, and will meet quarterly in Darwin. Support will be provided for members travelling from regional and remote communities.

Applications are open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the Northern Territory. Individuals with experience in domestic, family and sexual violence services, policy development or lived experience are encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants will be appointed for a three-year term and will receive remuneration in accordance with Northern Territory Government guidelines.

Expressions of Interest close at midnight on 7 June 2026.
