A British Army soldier has died following a training accident in northern Iraq, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed on Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday while the soldier was taking part in military activities in the region.
The MoD said the service member’s family has been informed and requested privacy before any further details are made public.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey announced the death in the House of Commons, expressing condolences to the soldier’s family and unit.
British military personnel remain deployed in Iraq as part of Operation Shader, the UK’s contribution to the international coalition working to prevent the return of the Islamic State (ISIS/Daesh) extremist group.
Their duties include training local security forces in weapons maintenance, counter-improvised explosive device (IED) techniques, medical support, engineering, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and strike operations.
The tragedy comes months after the death of George Hooley, a 28-year-old Parachute Regiment soldier who was killed in a training-related incident in Ukraine in December while observing the testing of a new military weapon.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Iraq training accident is expected to take place.
