One Nation’s sold-out event cancelled at the last minute by venue

One Nation fundraiser moved after venue cancels event amid planned protest.

A fundraising event for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party in Melbourne has been forced to relocate after the original venue withdrew from hosting the function following plans for a protest outside.

Victoria Police confirmed that Italian restaurant Giorgio Casa in Moonee Ponds had cancelled the sold-out event, stressing that the decision was made by the venue itself.

“Victoria Police is aware a venue in Moonee Ponds is no longer holding an event tonight. This decision was made by the venue,” a police spokesperson said.

Police also stated they were not aware of any threats related to the event but would maintain a presence in the area due to expected protest activity.

One Nation representatives told that the fundraiser would proceed at an alternative location, although details of the new venue were not disclosed.

Speaking to reporters after arriving at Melbourne Airport, Pauline Hanson addressed the planned demonstration, saying she hoped protesters would listen to her message rather than engage in disruptive behaviour.

“People have a right to attend a function, regardless of who is speaking, and hear what they have to say,” Hanson said. “That’s common decency, respect and part of our democracy.”

The protest was organised by Campaign Against Fascism, which confirmed on social media that its demonstration would still go ahead.

Organisers said they wanted to oppose Hanson’s appearance in Melbourne, declaring there was “no room for fascism” in the city.

Several other groups, including No Room for Racism, Free Palestine Melbourne and Victorian Socialists, had also planned to gather outside the event.

Earlier in the day, One Nation chief of staff James Ashby criticised the protesters during an interview on radio station 3AW.

The Melbourne fundraiser follows a similar event in Perth earlier this week, where hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the venue carrying signs opposing racism. Police maintained a significant presence to ensure public safety and prevent any disturbances.
