Albanese welcomes US–Iran ceasefire, calls for continued diplomacy

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, urging all sides to exercise restraint and work towards a lasting peace through diplomatic efforts.

In a statement, Albanese said ongoing constructive dialogue would be crucial to preventing further tensions in the Middle East. He also noted that restoring vital trade routes through the Strait of Hormuz would take time.

“We are pleased that the agreement between the United States and Iran includes steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore freedom of navigation,” Albanese said.

The ceasefire follows an announcement by US President Donald Trump, who confirmed that Washington and Tehran had reached an agreement to end months of escalating hostilities.

Trump said the deal would lead to the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of the US naval blockade, describing the agreement as a major achievement for global energy supplies and maritime security.

“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete.

Congratulations to all,” Trump wrote on social media, adding that international shipping could once again move freely through the strategic waterway.

Although full details of the agreement have not yet been released, Iran has confirmed the ceasefire and stated that it includes an immediate and permanent end to hostilities, including those involving Lebanon.

Iranian state media reported that Tehran has instructed its armed forces to remain on high alert despite the agreement, while claiming that its military actions had “humiliated” the United States and Israel.

World leaders, including officials from Türkiye and other nations involved in mediation efforts, have welcomed the agreement as an important step towards regional stability. They have also stressed the need for continued dialogue to secure long-term peace.

The official signing ceremony for the agreement is expected to take place in Switzerland on June 19.
