A man who died in a suspected shark attack off Western Australia’s south coast has been identified as 35-year-old Daniel Turpin. His family has paid tribute to him as an “adored husband, son, brother and uncle.”
Turpin was spearfishing with relatives near Michaelmas Island, off Albany, when the attack occurred at around 11:20 am local time yesterday.
In a public statement, the family said he had a lifelong connection to the ocean.
“Daniel was an adored husband, son, brother and uncle who had a lifelong love and deep respect for the ocean. Our family is devastated by this tragic loss, and we are still coming to terms with what has happened. Daniel brought enormous joy to the lives of those who knew and loved him, and he will be deeply missed,” the statement said.
They also expressed gratitude to emergency services and others who provided support in the aftermath of the incident.
“We would like to thank the emergency services personnel and all those who have offered their support and compassion during this incredibly difficult time,” the family added, noting they would not be making further public comment.
Western Australia Police said Turpin was attacked while spearfishing with family members and was later brought back to shore by boat. St John Ambulance paramedics were waiting at the dock, but he could not be revived. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Authorities said a tagged great white shark had been detected near Frenchman Bay shortly before the incident, though it is not confirmed whether it was involved in the attack.
Officials have urged the public to exercise caution around the Michaelmas Island area and follow any beach closures issued by authorities.
Western Australia Premier Roger Cook said he was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy and extended his condolences to the family and first responders.
The incident comes just weeks after another fatal shark attack in Western Australian waters, highlighting growing concern over recent encounters.
Earlier, 38-year-old Steven Mattaboni also died after being attacked while spearfishing near Horseshoe Reef, off Rottnest Island near Perth. He had been in the water with friends when he was bitten on both legs, reportedly by a great white shark.
