The Commonwealth Secretariat has appointed Australian-British executive Tania Baumann and Indian diplomat Tanmaya Lal as its new Deputy Secretaries-General, reinforcing the organisation’s leadership ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
The appointments were announced by Shirley Botchwey as the Commonwealth seeks to enhance its capacity to address global challenges and support its 56 member nations.
Baumann, who began her role on 21 May 2026, will lead the Secretariat’s corporate functions, including finance, governance, human resources and organisational strategy. Holding both British and Australian citizenship, she brings extensive international leadership experience, having most recently served as Chief Operating Officer of the World Energy Council. She has also held senior positions with Nominet and the International Chamber of Commerce UK.
Lal, who assumed office in March 2026, will oversee the Commonwealth’s programmes focused on democratic, economic and environmental resilience under its 2025–2030 Strategic Plan. With nearly 35 years in diplomacy, he previously served as Secretary (West) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs and held key assignments as ambassador, high commissioner and senior representative at the United Nations.
Throughout his diplomatic career, Lal has played a leading role in international negotiations on climate change, migration, sustainable development and artificial intelligence, while also advancing India’s development partnerships across Africa and the Global South.
The Commonwealth Secretariat said the appointments come at a pivotal moment as the organisation works to deepen cooperation among member states on governance, sustainability, trade and resilience in an increasingly complex global environment.
