Innocent family believed not to be intended targets in south-west Sydney shooting and firebombing

A family in south-west Sydney has been left shaken after their home was targeted in a drive-by shooting and firebombing that police believe was a case of mistaken identity.

Emergency services were called to Sapphire Place in Eagle Vale at around 4:30am after neighbours reported hearing gunshots.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a black BMW sedan on fire outside the home.

Acting Commander Michael Moroney said early investigations suggest the family living at the property was not the intended target.

“At this stage, we understand the residents had only recently moved into the home, so they were likely not the people being targeted,” he said.

Inside the house at the time were a husband, wife and their three children, who were left terrified by the attack.

The homeowner said the family was sleeping when several gunshots were fired.

“We only recently moved here and haven’t been living here for long,” she said.

“It appears to be a case of mistaken identity. We are not bad people.”

She also revealed that one bullet narrowly missed her children, grazing above their heads before hitting the roof.

Police believe the attack had been carefully planned. Security cameras reportedly captured the suspects about 30 minutes earlier as they surveyed the area.

CCTV footage showed three men arriving in a dark-coloured ute before fleeing after the incident, although investigators believe more people may have been involved.

Police are now focusing on who previously lived at the property as part of their investigation.

Authorities are urging anyone in the Eagle Vale area with CCTV or dashcam footage to contact police.
